Special Assembly For Our Sport's Stars 2017
The pupils of St. Oliver Plunkett N.S have made a fantastic start to the 2017 sporting calendar.

Within the last two week we have had three school teams represent us with distinction in the Cumann na mBunscoil finals. Firstly the boys' football reached the semi-final stage of the 7 a-side finals. They were unfortunately beaten by the eventual winners. They performed admirably and it was a terrific result especially considering it was the first time the school had entered the football mini 7's.

On Friday the 20th of October the Boys ‘and girls' hurling and camogie took to the fields in Loughgeorge. First up were the girls. They defeated Northampton and Baile na habhann on route to the semi-final stage. There they played a very impressive Coldwood side and just lost out to a very talented team. They did us all proud on the day and we are delighted to say that they are one of the four best camogie teams in the county.

Next up were the boys. They played Killeeneen and Gurteen in their league matches and showed fantastic skill, desire and skill to overcome their foes. The horrible weather conditions put an end to play that evening with the finals rescheduled for Wednesday the 25th. First up in the semi-finals were Oranmore, this was a very tight game and it took the warriors from Newcastle quite a while to warm up. The game went to extra time where we eventually gained the upper hand which set us up for a final with Loughrea. This again was a tight affair but the passion and commitment that the team showed pushed them over the line.

This is the first time Newcastle have won the boys' competition and also the first time since 1988 that an Athenry primary school have won the coveted prize. This highlights the fantastic achievement of the group who should be very proud of their achievement.

A special thanks once again to all the parents who supported the players throughout the tournaments. Your interest and willingness to give up your time to watch the pupils grow and flourish is unwavering and very much appreciated.
