Members Of The Defence Forces Visit Newcastle
We had a very special day today in the school when members of the Defence Forces came to present us with our copy of the Proclamation and an Irish flag. The flag and proclamation were presented to the youngest and oldest child in the school. The flag will be officially raised on the 15th of March. Every school in the country will raise their flags at the same time on the same day to honour the memory of all those who fought and died in the 1916 rising. It is thanks to these great men and women that we enjoy freedom today.
Ms Murphy and Gerard Aherne welcomed the members of the Defence forces to the school. The children played the Fields of Athenry and Ámhran na bhFiann on the tin whistles and we all sang Ámhran na bhFiann. The children asked lots of questions. Thank you to the members of the defence forces for visiting Newcastle and for our gift of the Proclamation and our new Irish flag.
