A Fond Farewell to Mr Neylon (25-9-2015)

On Friday the staff of Newcastle school met up to celebrate our colleague Des Neylon's retirement. We met for lunch in the New Park and it was wonderful to see Des looking so well and in great spirits. We miss his wit and charm around the school so it was lovely for us to catch up. The children have lovely memories of Mr Neylon and this is evident in the way they remember him with fondness. They made him beautiful cards to thank him for all of his work in Newcastle since 1999, when he joined our staff. We wish Des the very best of luck in his retirement and we wish him many years of happiness ahead. He will be coming to a special assembly to say goodbye to the pupils and parents. (Date to be confirmed.)

Best of luck to Des.

Ms Murphy said a few words to thank Des for all of his work in the school.

Mrs Keane presented Mr Neylon with the beautiful cards that he will treasure.

One of the 3rd class drew a portrait of Des. We think it is a fantastic likeness.

Mrs Magnier presented a beautiful bouquet of flowers to Teresa Neylon.

Teresa Neylon was delighted that the flowers matched her outfit perfectly!

Athenry Music School Concert 23-9-2015

Thank you to Úna and Colman from Athenry music school who came to perform a wonderful concert for all the children and teachers in Newcastle. They played the tin whistle, flute, harp and uillinn pipes for us. We sang along with the musicians and we enjoyed the concert very much.

Cross Country In Renmore 2015

On the 22nd of September 24 children went to Renmore to represent the school in the Cross Country running competition. Ms Treacy and Teresa Hann accompanied the children on the bus. A sincere thank you to Teresa for giving up her time to accompany the runners. Thank you to Mary Rohan for helping out with the warm ups. Thank you to all the parents who came out to support the runners. They ran like champions on a very tough course and we even brought home some medals. Congratulations to you all.

Planting a tree

The out going Parents Association kindly donated a lovely cherry blossom tree to the school. We decided to plant the tree in the front yard so everyone will be able to see it in full bloom next year. The fourth and fifth class worked hard digging the hole, pulling the roots of the plant, giving the plant a fine bed of compost, backfilling with soil and watering the plant. We all learnt about the elements needed for plants to grow so it was a great lesson. Check out the pics below!
 First we dug the hole.
Our head gardener was keeping a close eye on proceedings.

We dropped in the plant after giving it a fine bed of compost.

Water at the ready!

We backfilled the soil.

Even Mr. O Connor helped.

Check out our new tree!!
